Not only is it free video editing software, it is also a compositing and 3d computer graphics tool. The functionality is amazing, but so is the learning curve. This is a complex piece of video editing software to learn but it will give most of the top-of-the-range tools a run for their money.

Currently the market leader in professional video editing tools is Avid (most Hollywood movies nowadays are edited on Avid tools). Guess what? Avid has a free video editing tool for home editing as well. It's called Videospin and it is actually a less functional version of their Pinnacle editing software (which is a commercial package). It supports many different formats of video and can output to many different formats as well. The main selling point of Videospin, though, is the fact that it can output directly to Youtube!

A favourite of mine is Avidemux, This is a very simple free video editing tool that works on both Windows, Mac and Linux. It's quite basic, but it will support many different file formats and is very stable.

There are many others on the market, we haven't even touched items such as Wax, T@BZS4 or Jahshaka, and the whole area of tools for video conversion between formats is worthy of an article of it's own, but I hope this has opened your eyes to some of the tools that are available other than the basic ones supplied on your PC or Mac.

Rumor: Apple’s January Media Event to Involve Digital Textbooks and Education

Oh boy, rumors regarding Apple’s January Media Event seem to be showing up by the day. Just yesterday, it was reported that Apple is planning a special event in New York for the end of this month. The event is reported to be for a “media-related announcement” and not for the iPad 3 or an Apple television set.

Then, just a few hours after that rumor appeared, TechCrunch reported that the event would focus on publishing and eBooks (which are sold through Apple’s iBooks platform) rather than iAds. TechCrunch’s Alexia Tsotsis’s also noted that attendance would be ”more publishing industry-oriented than consumer-focused.” Now, Journalist Clayton Morris of Fox News suggests that Apple will in fact hold a media event in New York later this month. This location was chosen because it is ”more centrally located for textbook and publishing.”

He also said that the event was originally scheduled for late fall of 2011, but was postponed. Wait a second, how can something not announced to the public be considered as “delayed?” According to the report, the press conference will be regarding iTunes U. iTunes U is an easy and fantastic way for students to access educational content for free.

Morris also said that event will feature “a big announcement in a demure space.” He expects “at least two large project announcements as they relate to Apple in education.”

Here is what I know from sources involved:
- This event will focus on iTunes University and Apple in education
- I learned of the event back in September when it was originally scheduled for late Fall in New York but it was eventually postponed.
- The event will be in New York rather than in the Silicon Valley because New York is more centrally located for textbook and publishing.
- This initiative has been in the making for years.
- The announcement will be small in size but large in scope: a big announcement in a demure space.
- I expect at least two large project announcements as they relate to Apple in education.
- Steve Jobs was intinimately [sic] involved with this project before his passing. He gave a hat tip to the textbook side of this project in the Isaacson biography.
- This will not be a hardware-related announcement.

So from these rumors so far we can conclude the following:

Asus Transformer Prime Bootloader Will Be Unlockable After All

Over the last couple of days, there have been quite a huge uproar about the highly locked down bootloader on the Asus Transformer Prime. Nearly no one expected Asus to take such a drastic step and lock down the bootloader of their tablet. The company even received heavy criticism for this move.

Thanks to all the media attention this topic has got, Asus decided to release an official statement about the matter. The company announced via its Facebook page that even though the bootloader on the Prime is locked down, the company will soon be releasing a tool, which will allow developers and advanced users to unlock it.

Below is the official statement from Asus about this whole issue-:

Regarding the bootloader, the reason we chose to lock it is due to content providers’ requirement for DRM client devices to be as secure as possible. ASUS supports Google DRM in order to provide users with a high quality video rental experience. Also, based on our experience, users who choose to root their devices risk breaking the system completely. However, we know there is demand in the modding community to have an unlocked bootloader. Therefore, ASUS is developing an unlock tool for that community. Please do note that if you choose to unlock your device, the ASUS warranty will be void, and Google video rental will also be unavailable because the device will be no longer protected by security mechanism.

The company has also decided to remove ‘GPS’ from the spec sheet of the Prime because of all the complaints from its user about its poor positioning system. Readers can find more info about this here.

Create an Infographic with your Twitter Activity

If you have an account on Twitter, you should try Tweetsheet.

The app reads you Twitter activity and turns it into a visual infographic (see sample) revealing your top followers, your most-retweeted posts, and some other interesting details. The stats mentioned in the infographic are calculated using the last 3200 tweets that you have posted on Twitter.

One good thing about Tweetsheet is that only requires “read access” to your Twitter account during authentication so it won’t tweet your results without asking.

There’s however no option to save the infographic as an image. Thanks @Shankar.

Track the Iowa 2012 Presidential Caucus with iPhone and Android Apps

Much to the dislike of many Americans, the 2012 Presidential campaign season rolls into full swing tonight with the advent of the Iowa 2012 Presidential caucus. For many of us, we have to endure seemingly endless political coverage and get to hear every bad thing these politicians have done since their childhood. However, for you political junkies out there, you’re in luck! There are now apps for both Android and Apple devices so you can track all the exciting news out of Iowa.

The first app I would like to tell you about comes from the Iowa Republican party. Not that I want to put a political slant on this article, but rather the Republican party is pretty much the only real news that will come out of the Iowa caucuses because the Democratic party only has one candidate, President Obama. The App is called “IowaGOP2012? and is designed by Victory Enterprises. According to the description at the Apple store the app will “explain the history and the process of the caucus, let you find your caucus location, and provide easy to use ways to contact Iowa GOP staff, Iowa Elected officials, and Caucus Candidates. You can see a screenshot of the app pictured below. It looks very much like the Iowa GOP website. You can download the Android app here and the Apple app here.

If you would like a more objective view of the caucus, then you might want to consider Gannett’s “Iowa Caucuses” app. It appears to only be available via iTunes. It is developed by The Des Moines Register. According to their description the app will:

? Find all of The Des Moines Register caucus coverage or filter by your choice of candidates.
? Get live results on caucus night on Jan. 3.
? Add a candidate event to your calendar simply by tapping the date and time listed in the event.
? Get directions to an event by tapping the map.
? Share stories, videos and candidate information on Twitter, Facebook and more.
? Download the content once and read offline.
? Push notifications.

Iowa is the first U.S. state to cast votes toward presidential candidates. They take great pride in being “First in the Nation”. The Iowa caucus is a very different process than primaries that are held in many other states. ABC news has an interesting video which explains the process.

IBM Admits to Selling PC Division to Lenovo to Please the Chinese Government

In 2005, Lenono acquired IBM’s PC business to instantly become the third largest PC supplier in the world, edging out Dell and others who were also vying for the massive and profitable division.

Now, Samuel J. Palmisano, who has successfully led IBM through the past decade, has revealed that Lenovo was picked as a buyer due to political considerations. Palmisano fought off intense internal opposition against selling the PC division as he was convinced that the real opportunity to innovate and shine was elsewhere. His decision led to IBM losing its title of the world’s largest information technology company, but resulted in generating more value for shareholders.

Palminaso revealed to NyTimes that he deflected overtures from Dell and private equity firms and sold to Lenovo to please the Chinese government. The Chinese government wants its corporations to expand globally, and by helping Lenono fulfill that national goal IBM was hoping to get into the good books of the government. China, where the government still wields a large amount of influence, is a lucrative market for IBM. The Chinese government is also a stakeholder in Lenovo thanks to investments by the state-owned Chinese Academy of Sciences.

How to Close All Background iOS Apps at Once

When you double-tap the home button of your iPad or iPhone, the dock will show a list of all the recently used apps and some of them could still be running in the background.

You tap and hold your finger on the app icon until it begins to jiggle and you can then press the red “minus” sign (screenshot) to close one or more of these background apps. If a particular app is not running, this action will simply remove its listing from the multitasking bar.

If you would like to close all the background apps at once, here’s a free app for iPhone and iPad that can help. You don’t even have to jailbreak your device.

Launch the app and then shake your iPhone / iPad to terminate every single app that could be running in the background. Alternatively, you can just pull and release the processes list (see video) to close all the background running apps at once.

If you are on Windows or Mac, you always quit applications that you are not using so that more memory (RAM) becomes available to front-running apps. However, you many not see any improvement in performance by closing background iOS apps.

Engadget: How do you close applications when multitasking?
Jobs: In multitasking, if you see a task manager, they blew it. Users shouldn't ever have to think about it.

John Gruber explains why closing background apps isn’t required:

The iOS multitasking bar is not like the command tab switcher on Mac or Windows. It is not a list of currently “running” applications. It is simply a list of your most recently used applications, whether they’re running in the background, suspended in memory, or completely inactive.

In the past, I have seem apps, especially games, that became unresponsive (freeze) and force-quit was the only way to get them working again. The Process Killer app mentioned above might be helpful in such situations though else you need not worry about shutting down suspended background apps.

Play Framework Modules: Divide and Conquer

It’s usually the case that you start developing an application and go on fulfilling requirements. When your application grows bigger you start to realize the convenience of separating it into different components. Moreover, when you develop your second or third application, your begin to recognize certain features that could be reused across different applications.

These are two good reasons to modularize an application. Ideally we should aim at components with high cohesion and low coupling.

The Java language has proven itself quite fit to accomplish this kind of tasks. It provides general means to enforce the use of well defined API thru interfaces, abstract classes, etc.

Play framework developers think that this is perfectly fine for developing a general purpose library, but in the case of a web application reusability and modularization could be best achieved by other means. Have a look at this excerpt taken from play framework’s FAQ:

Java itself is a very generic programming language and not originally designed for web application development. It is a very different thing to write a generic and reusable Java library and to create a web application. A web application itself doesn’t need to be designed to be reusable. You need less abstraction, less configuration. Reusability does exist for web applications, but through web service APIs rather than language-level integration.

So when it comes to reusability, play provides us with a solution better suited for web applications.

A module is just another Play framework application. The only difference is that a module is not meant to be run on his own, it needs to be included into a containing application.

Nevertheless, there area a couple of differences between a module and a regular application, mainly that a module has no conf file (it has to be provided by the main application) and everything in a module is optional.

Doing is better than saying, so as usual we will look for a fine opportunity to make a simple module to show how it works.

As many of you already know, we are working on the spanish translation of play framework site. We wanted to add web analytics to it so that we can see how people were using it.

So in order to follow this example, we’ll need a play framework app deployed somewhere on the Internet. Nowadays there are lots of Java hosting options available for free. Here you have a couple of tutorials for deploying on openshift, google application engine and heroku.

First let’s create a play framework application, I’ll create the app at ~/devel/apps/module-test, you can choose whatever location you like, just be sure to update the commands appropriately.

To create the app, run the following command at an os prompt:

sas@ubuntu:~/devel/apps/module-test$ play new analytics-app~ _ _~ _ __ | | __ _ _ _| |~ | '_ \| |/ _' | || |_|~ | __/|_|\____|\__ (_)~ |_| |__/~~ play! 1.2.4, http://www.playframework.org~~ The new application will be created in /home/sas/Dropbox/Public/devel/play/apps/module-test/analytics-app~ What is the application name? [analytics-app]~~ OK, the application is created.~ Start it with : play run analytics-app~ Have fun!

Now it would be a good time to deploy it somewhere. For this tutorial we will deploy it at openshift, you can use any host you want (For more information on setting up your environment for openshift deployment follow this tutorial)

Create a new directory at ~/devel/apps/module-test/openshift, go to that directory and run:

rhc-create-app -l mymail@mail.com -p mypassword -t jbossas-7.0 -a analyticsappAttempting to create remote application space: analyticsappNow your new domain name is being propagated worldwide (this might take a minute)...Pulling new repo down[...]Successfully created application: analyticsapp

Next, we’ll get rid of the demo app:

cd ~/devel/apps/module-test/openshift/analyticsapprm -fr pom.xml src

And we’ll compile and package the newly created app as an exploded war. Go to ~/devel/apps/module-test folder and run:

cd ~/devel/apps/module-testplay war analytics-app -o openshift/analyticsapp/deployments/ROOT.war~ _ _~ _ __ | | __ _ _ _| |~ | '_ \| |/ _' | || |_|~ | __/|_|\____|\__ (_)~ |_| |__/~~ play! 1.2.4, http://www.playframework.org~JPDA port 8000 is already used. Will try to use any free port for debuggingListening for transport dt_socket at address: 5397800:22:38,021 INFO ~ Starting /home/sas/Dropbox/Public/devel/play/apps/module-test/analytics-app00:22:39,891 INFO ~ Precompiling ...00:22:49,075 INFO ~ Done.~ Packaging current version of the framework and the application to /home/sas/Dropbox/Public/devel/play/apps/module-test/openshift/analyticsapp/deployments/ROOT.war ...~ Done !~~ You can now load /home/sas/Dropbox/Public/devel/play/apps/module-test/openshift/analyticsapp/deployments/ROOT.war as a standard WAR into your servlet container~ You can't use play standard commands to run/stop/debug the WAR application...~ ... just use your servlet container commands instead~~ Have fun!~

Now we just need to commit the application and push it to our git repo on openshift:

cd ~/devel/apps/module-test/openshift/analyticsapptouch deployments/ROOT.war.dodeploygit add -Agit commit -m "deploy play framework app"git push origin

Note: The first time it will take a couple of minutes to push the application, because of play framework libraries. Later pushes will be much quicker, git is smart enough to only send updated files.

And that’s it, you’ve just deployed your first app to red hat’s cloud. You can see it running at http://analyticsapp-opensas.rhcloud.com/ (of course, you’ll have to replace “opensas” with your own openshift user name).

Adding Google web analytics to a play app is really easy. You just need a gmail account, then go to Google Analytics web site, click on “sign up”, login with your gmail account, and complete all the required data.

In the account name enter “analytics-app”, in the website’s url enter http://analyticsapp-opensas.rhcloud.com, agree to the terms and conditions and click on “Create account”.

You’ll be taken to your analytics-app account page, there you can see the tracking code. You’ll just have to paste it in your app. So open the file at ~/devel/apps/module-test/analytics-app/app/views/main.html and paste the tracking code before the closing head tag, like this:

Note: Google will provide you with your own UA-XXXXXXXX-1 account code, so just copy and paste the code from your Google analytics account page, and NOT from this page!

Now you just have to generate the war folder, commit, and push it once again to openshift to deploy your changes. Every time you make a change you’ll have to follow these same steps to deploy it to openshift.

cd ~/devel/apps/module-testplay war analytics-app/ -o openshift/analyticsapp/deployments/ROOT.warcd openshift/analyticsapp/git add -Agit commit -m "added tracking code"git push origin

Visit again your page at http://analyticsapp-opensas.rhcloud.com/, and see the source of the page to check that the tracking code has been added. You can also see it in action on Google’s analytics page, click on “Home”, Real-Time (BETA), and the Overview. You should have one visitor (yes, it’s you!).

So far now we created a new play application and deployed it to openshift. Then we created a Google analytic account and added the tracking code the our play application. Everything is working ok and our app is being tracked by Google. Now we are going to move that functionality to a module so that we can reuse it from other apps.

To create a new module you have to use the “new-module” play command, like this:

cd /home/sas/devel/apps/module-test/play new-module analytics

Now, in order to tell our main application (in our case analytics-app) to include this module, we have to configure a local repository.

Edit ~/devel/apps/module-test/analytics-app/conf/dependencies.yml like this:

# Application dependenciesrequire: - play - analytics -> analyticsrepositories: - My local modules: type: local artifact: ${application.path}/../[module] contains: - analytics

and after that run the following command to tell play to resolve dependencies.

cd ~/devel/apps/module-test/analytics-appplay dependencies~ _ _~ _ __ | | __ _ _ _| |~ | '_ \| |/ _' | || |_|~ | __/|_|\____|\__ (_)~ |_| |__/~~ play! 1.2.4, http://www.playframework.org~~ Resolving dependencies using /home/sas/devel/apps/module-test/analytics-app/conf/dependencies.yml,~~ analytics->analytics -> (from My local modules)~~ Installing resolved dependencies,~~ modules/analytics -> /home/sas/devel/apps/module-test/analytics/../analytics~~ Done!~

You can now start the main application on your workstation:

cd ~/devel/apps/module-test/analytics-appplay run

You can see your app running at http://localhost:9000.

Now we will move the tracking code to a tag defined in the module, so we’ll create a file ~/devel/apps/module-test/analytics/app/views/analytics.html with the tracking code, like this:

And now, replace the tracking code in main.html with a call to the tag, like this:

Our module is almost ready, there’s just one thing that’s preventing us from really reusing it on another application: the Google analytics code is hardcoded in our tag!

So we will read it from the application.conf file. Just edit the analytics.html tag like this:

and add the following to your main application configuration file at ~/devel/apps/module-test/analytics-app/conf/application.conf

analytics.code=UA-XXXXXXXX-1

This tag will will update the tracker every time the page is rendered, even when we are working on our development workstation!

So we will add a minor improvement to prevent the module from logging the page activity while working in development mode.

Just add the following condition to the code:
